Designed to maximize space efficiency and audio performance in small, slim-profile mobile phones, it is the only speaker on the market with a form factor of 11 x 15 x 3.5 mm. It requires half the back cavity (1 cm3) of a typical 16-mm round speaker to achieve the same resonance frequency, and takes up nearly 45% less total volume (speaker + back cavity). The smaller form factor makes it ideal for use in small, thin “candy bar” and flip-phone handsets.
The rectangular speaker delivers pure, uncolored sound performance. Compared to 16-mm round speakers of the same height, the rectangular speaker has a smaller area and a smaller volume, but produces a higher maximum sound pressure. It also produces the lowest resonance frequency (800 Hz) in the 1-cm3 back cavity. The speaker’s compound membrane has an additional stiffening plate - made from a unique, lightweight composite material - that provides inner damping and results in extremely low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) values.
A new design for the spring connector makes the speaker more robust. To avoid damage from unintended deflection during the handling process, the ends of the spring connector are protected. Also, the contacts are pre-loaded to provide immediate electrical contact within the optimal gas-tight force interval.
The rectangular speaker uses a production technology, unique to NXP, which results in a 0.6-second cycle time and an annual production output per production line of 40 million speakers. The production process uses 100% in-line measurement of all specified acoustical and electrical parameters to guarantee the highest standards of quality.
